Families: God's Idea

God tells us in his Holy Word, the Bible, that the family unit is how he originally inetended us to exist.  In the beginning of the Bible, in the Book of Genesis, the book of beginnings, God created Adam and Eve and gave them instructions to "be fruitful and multiply".  Many times throughout the Bible, God instructs his people to teach their children His ways.  Much of God's discussions in the Bible about keeping his commandments also refer to the importance of generational thinking, a lost art in America today.  First, read the passages below for what God's word has to say about raising Christian children.  Next, read the wise words of two deep-thinking preachers from days gone by to read their thoughts about raising children up for the Lord.

Psalm 45:17
I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations: therefore shall the people praise thee for ever and ever.
Deuteronomy 6:1
1 These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.
Deuteronomy 6: 6
6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

A Father's Duty by Paul Bunyan

This Bible teaching makes a very good case of why it is important for fathers to most of all provide spiritually for their families.  Fathers are reminded that are to oversee and lead all family members to spiritual health, no matter how difficult that may seem.

Children to be Educated for Christ by Unknown

The bulleted points of advice given in this plea for parental responsibility is very refreshing among the common types of parenting advice today.  Parents are warned not to be shy abut talking abut Christ, seeking and praying for their children's conversion early in life or providing godly examples in every day family life.  Although some of the advice may seem old-fashioned (as indeed it is, such as watch how you talk on the Sabbath) we are well-reminded to consider how we might seek to follow some of these examples with the help of God's grace.
